Welcome, Jc_wt! You're in a good place! The people on here are very supportive.

Regarding stress. Stress stalls weight loss. Period. Get a handle on it or you'll be frustrated by how much you stall along the way. The thing that helped me most was to just stop worrying so much about the weight coming off (a daily struggle not to worry, I will say) and just "keep swimming". It'll happen. Also, lift heavy stuff. Lift heavy stuff A LOT! My time in the weight room is the number one way I reduce stress. There's just something about throwing heavy stuff around, whilst listening to inappropriate hip hop music and talking smack with "the boys", that really relaxes and recharges me.

Looking forward to seeing your progress!

RE: Today's progress was yesterday's plan...
Oh! I forgot to mention my PR from earlier this week. 190lbs on back squats. I just decided to give it a try and was able to do six reps! I'm sure I can go higher and that's going to be the focus of my next stage of training. One more week of 10 x 10's (if I ever get over this darn cold/flu. Have I complained enough?) and then I'm going to four days/week of upper/lower splits focusing on increasing intensity while improving form.

Yay!

You are so impressive! I was wondering if you could tell me the purpose of the 10x10? I'm nowhere near you in weights but I am doing the 5x5 and that caught my eye. Thanks!

Kati,

Why 10x10's? Well, to be honest, it looked like a challenge. When you read all the websites on German Volume Training they make it sound like the ninth level of hell. Sooooo hard, soooo killer, sooooo I decided I had to do it. happy I wasn't feeling like I was seeing the results I wanted at the time and thought a change might be good. So I picked the hardest thing I could find that also promised great muscle building. I'm a little loopy that way.

It's not easy, for sure and those first few workouts I wanted to throw up. However, it's gotten easier and has made me realize that nothing is hard. It's all in our head. I've also built some good muscle on it. I have more definition, have dropped some fat, and feel like a real bad ass. Especially when all the guys in the gym blanch when I say 10 sets of 8 squats and 10 of 8 lunges(you modify a bit for the leg stuff because 10x10 of squats and lunges really is murder). I'm planning on going back to a traditional routine soon and am sort of laughing at the thought of 4 sets of 6 reps with heavy weight.

All that said, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone new to lifting. I think your nervous system and muscles need conditioning with at least a year of proper training before trying something like it, otherwise you can really hurt yourself and set yourself back.

In short..... I'm a bit off in the head. laughing

Oh, and I'm proud to say that I made it into the gym tonight to do 10 sets of 10 of incline bench press (70lbs) and barbell rows (70lbs). I think I've finally kicked this cold to the curb, so tomorrow I'll get in legs and won't have missed a workout this week! Yay!

Thanks for the great explanation! I loved the part about the guys blanching over what you are doing. That rocks!

You officially are a badass!

Yeah, I just wanted to chime in with what Tipularia said - if I actively think about losing weight, it Does.not.happen. (I feel). If I change my goals to lifting heavy stuff, and like Tipularia, putting the boys in the weight room in their place wink I am definitely in a better mindsight and the positive body changes just seem to happen more naturally.

Tipularia, your post reminds me of my spin class last night - the teacher, who is new, starts class with "if you know me, you know I like my music loud and explicit, so let's get going." Inappropriate hip hop ensued and it was fabulous.

And kudos to you on all of your badassery and progress. You should be so proud of yourself. (190!!!)

Thanks, Emma!

There's just something about that hip hop music, isn't there? The guys would get embarrassed at first, when the really raunchy/curse-filled stuff would come on and try to change it. Now I ask them to "put the raunchy/angry young men music on because I need it! I swear I lift better and more with it.

........I just try really hard not to listen to the lyrics too closely. d'oh

OR, I ask questions like "why did he put her in the trunk of his car, exactly?" (For some reason these hip hop guys like putting women in car trunks.) The guys find my questions simultaneously hilarious and embarrassing. LOL! It really is like family in there.
