RE: Emma's journal
Holy smokes! Sounds like a helluva workout! Rope climbing?!!! Seriously impressive! And yeah, the Cosgrove complex is a killer finisher!

I hope the health issues get better for you soon.

RE: Emma's journal
Period did come on last Saturday, so 3 days late, and lasted for just 2 days. I think this is something I need to track to keep an eye on. I'm not alarmed, as my body has gone through some massive shifts over the course of the year in terms of trying to correct my gut and hormones, but something to keep an eye on.

Another week down. Work is really stressful in October - the worst will be over by Tues, wish me luck all! - and the scale shows it. I can always count on a good couple pounds when life is crazy.

I'm still not tracking calories and can just tell when I'm over or under... Like now, I'm starving because I was under yesterday, big calorie burn day. I'm pretty confident I'm getting between 125-150 g of protein per day, but I'm starting to rethink my soy intake. All you researchers out there, do you have an opinion on if soy does affect testosterone levels? I have read conflicting things but can't seem to find anything that isn't blatantly biased (both sides of the argument). I'm just debating whether or not I need to start eating other things. I don't rely 100% on soy, and I make sure what I do eat is non-GMO, but I wonder if its still too much.

Workouts this week included more benching, of which I majorly sucked at, and pullup/muscleup work, which is effing hard and I suck at, and double unders, which I'm getting better at! Did back squats yesterday, no Smith machine since the CF gym has racks, and the protocol called for 50% 1RM. I did 115, which is probably closer to 75% of my 1RM, but I was excited to try this out considering I literally have not non-Smith machined back squatted since high school.

Holy crap, you're strong!! I wanna be you when I grow up! happy

I'm interested in the soy discussion, too...I use soy milk in my coffee every day, and sometimes will drink a glass, and I've wondered about its effects on hormones, too. I drink it because I prefer the taste of soy over milk, but lately I've been wondering if I should rethink it...

RE: Emma's journal
I'm no expert but think i've read that those who have an underactive thyroid should generally avoid too much soy. If they do consume a lot then they need more thyroxine. I tend to think of thyroid as central to our function so anything that potentially interferes with it doing it's job properly is a no. But I expect those who have no thyroid problems wouldn't see any problems related to too much soy as it would naturally cope.

RE: Emma's journal
Ha, Maggie I should clarify that I did work towards pullups and muscleups, not pullups and muscleups themselves (goals!). Did things like ring dips, negative pullups, ring pullups. If you want a milk substitute, try the unsweetened coconut or almond milk, that's what we have in my house. Although I tend to think if this is your only extra soy, you are probably fine. I was thinking it could be more problematic when you are a consistent soy eater, like I am, via tempeh and tofu and edamame. I have it more days per week than not.

Yes West, this is kind of where my mind is at too. I am a firm believer that the thyroid and gut health rule the roost, and considering I'm on thyroid boosters, I'm now questioning the soy. Thanks for weighing in. Ergh. I may have to add chicken and eggs back in. I really wish I had a local farmer I could buy from, that is my hangup about it... Anyway, its such a journey, getting to a happy health place.

RE: Emma's journal
Hey, anything remotely resembling a pullup and/or muscleup is TOTALLY badass!! I was also very impressed with the 115 pound squat!! I'm still just working out on machines due to the toe injury, so I'm envious of anyone who's squatting with a bar, never mind 115 pounds!! You're awesome!!

I do use unsweetened almond milk and the almond/coconut blend for my tea and my protein shakes and I love it! I just need something a little more substantial and creamier in my coffee...so if that's the only soy I'm using, I won't worry about it.

And you're right, it's a lot of work getting to happy and healthy and balancing it with satisfied...but so worth the effort!! I can honestly say I'm more satisfied with less now that I've embraced the EM2WL lifestyle...it's truly been the most freeing decision I've ever made!!
