Brand spanking new and reading like crazy
Hello everyone,
My name is Beverly. I am a 35 year old homeschooling mommy to 7 children. I found the EM2WL site trying to find ways to aggressively refeed (Matt Stone style) with whole foods. While I am open to learning more about this I just could not get my mind around eating junk food... so I wanted to learn how to do it on the good food I like. We have been planning on starting GAPS on Jan 4th so I was trying to see if I could refeed on GAPS. Anyway - that is how I got here happy
Some background - I was a very skinny child and my mother always worried about me. She somehow convinced herself that if she could get me on steroids I would gain weight and things would be better. She found a doctor that prescribed steroids and I did indeed gain weight. She would feed me burger king breakfast, a school lunch and then we would stop at taco bell (where I would put away 12-18 tacos at a time) or for pizza, mexican, etc... all this so I could gain some weight... and boy did I ever. I got pregnant in high school at started that pregnancy at 260 - and I put on 60 pounds... I am not sure what my highest was. I wanted to be a police officer but at that weight of course I could not pass the physical. I worked at TDC (Texas Department of Corrections) instead until I was 21. Then I decided I really wanted to do something about my dream of being an officer. My dad (who was a sheriffs deputy) started running with me. I might be an oddity but I have never even considered counting calories. That is one reason I am actually a bit worried about doing the EM2WL thing - it looks like I HAVE to count them. Just by running - never dieted or restriceted anythign I ate, I went to 170. I met my wonderful hubby in the academy (he taught handcuffing - he gets a kick out of telling people that the first time he met me he put me in handcuffs and threw me to the ground).
Before we were married I started really trying to lose more weight and started a step class. My lowest weight was 160 but I wore a size 8. After the wedding I went to my doctor and asked for weight lose pills. She actually took me to the scale and reweighed me because she did not believe I was 160 happy She would not prescribe them for me though - telling me to just count calories and workout more. I never did that. I got pregnant with our son (my hubby adopted my little girl by the way - soon after we were married) and gained 40 pounds. After he was born I nursed him - one of my main motivations was people telling me how much weight I would lose! It would just fall of they said... well it did not! I got down to 180 and it would not budge. I tried everything. Now I am sad that I did not just enjoy my baby. We got pregnant again when our son was 8 months old and I gained 30 pounds with this pregnancy. Still not losing after she was born we (as a family) went raw vegan for about 2 years. I had another pregnancy during this time and gained only 18 pounds. I was still not losing weight and my husband said I was a little crazy during this time... added back in cooked food, then animal products , etc..
Then I had some allergy testing done and found I was allergic to wheat and soy. My doctor said I would probably do best on a grain free diet. So grain free it was... and then starch free... and now GAPS is supposed to start in Jan. Since reading Matt this last week I have actually ate above appetite and feeling more energetic.
My midwife has had me keep a food log and has for years told me that I dont eat enough food. I average around 1000-1200 calories - this is during pregnancy and breastfeeding. I always struggle with nursing with my milk drying during the first year. I am still nursing our current baby who will be 1 year on January 1st but I have steadily been declining in the milk department. I would LOVE to get my supply back and get him nursing again!
Now I dont purposely eat to few calories. I don't count them in any way - when I keep my food log my midwife counts them when I see her and that is how I even know the average. I am just not a hungry person and I always joked with her that it sure didnt look like I was "starving" like she said. I have pretty severe adrenal issues with my cortisol almost being non-existent. I was almost bedridden last year and we went to a local clinic that specilizes in womens health. They put me on Armour Thyroid, Pregnenolne and Cortisol. I very much want to be OFF these medications. I have recently become very lethargic again and have terrible insomnia. I have been up until 3-4 am almost every night for about a month. My little people get up at 7. My husband has hired two young ladies to come in to help during the week I have gotten so bad with my tiredness, weakness, etc...
He is extremely supportive of me eating more and says he has been telling me for years just by watching me that I dont eat enough. The only way I have lost weight is doing the HCG diet with injections. I am currently 224 (before trying this refeeding thing - I am afraid to weigh now because I know I will chicken out and not try this if I do...)
I just signed up for the coaching because to be very honest - my mind is so fuzzy most of the time I dont think I can figure it out on my own.
So thats my short introduction. Lord willing, I will be on your success story page soon...
BTW - I am terrified of gaining more weight! I told my husband to plan on me being a hermit if I gain more weight...

RE: Brand spanking new and reading like crazy
Typed a whole long response last night and when I hit Submit I discovered that our internet was down and the whole post went "poof*. Sorry for the delay in responding...

First of all welcome! So glad you have joined us over here! Seven children ... wow, they must keep you busy!!

I am certainly not a doctor, but it seems as though a lot of your problems (as I am sure you realize) could very well have come from under-eating. Although you did not give us your height, and even using a Light activity level (just guessing, due to the lethargy, tiredness, weakness..etc) your TDEE is probably somewhere around 2,400 calories. If you are breastfeeding, then you need to add on an additional 200 - 400 calories a day to support that, putting your TDEE somewhere around 2,700. Eating at 1,000 to 1,200, it's easy to see how steep your deficit is. Doing this long-term, the body has absolutely no other defense than to down-shift the metabolism and adapt to the low intake. When this happens, the body goes into a sort of "defense mode" and takes care of only the vital functions (like breathing, circulation, digestion...), while everything else gets put on hold. The hair, skin and nails start to become brittle, we feel cold all the time, and with the breastfeeding, that milk production will decrease and then eventually stop. The body is simply not going to allot calories to things like that when you are barely giving yourself enough calories for you yourself to exist, never mind these "extra" things... Your body has done what it is intended to do. Adapt.

So, are you intending to try to increase your intake at the same time as starting the GAPS diet? I am not very knowledgeable in this area, but I understand it is an elimination diet where you eat no grains or refined sugar, is that correct? If so, you may find it very difficult to start the both of them at the same time, although increasing your intake should certainly be a priority in your life.

If I were you, I would start using an App such as My Fitness Pal to start tracking your calories. Get a true idea of how much you are really eating, rather than just speculating. That is the only way you will have a baseline from which to start. Once you know where you are starting, then you will be able to create a plan.

Look forward to hearing back from you, and please feel free to start a journal of your own down in the Personal Journals section of these forums. It will give you a great way to keep all of your information in one place and make it easy to refer back for dates and data. It’s also a great place to converse with others who are going through the same process.

RE: Brand spanking new and reading like crazy
Whoops - I am 5'4 happy and I currently wear a size 18
Quite busy and very happy - our little brood is pretty joyful and a real blessing to us!
GAPS is a gut healing protocol. I have been told many times that I have leaky gut and that is causing all kinds of food allergies. GAPS has been recommended to fix my gut and a few of the kids, who also have food allergies. I started out with allergies to wheat and soy and have developed sensitivities to corn, dairy, and peanuts. I am told it will just get worse and worse. I have one child very allergic to wheat and one allergic to wheat, soy, dairy and sugar. I want to heal us all!
I wonder if my body is using these allergies as a defense mode - unable to deal with them.
I want to increase my intake while doing GAPS. There are no grains or sugar. Honey is the only sweetener allowed. I have been off sugar for a long time anyway. I have only been eating grains again since Thanksgiving. I would like to figure out how to do GAPS and EM2LW at the same time. I think I can do it!
I am not real tech savvy and dont have tons of time for counting calories. I am so unused to it. I have tried to do it before but part of my problem is that we dont eat packaged food - we even have our own eggs and meat that we raise. I have no idea how many calories anything I make has. I tried typing in my recipes to calculate the calories but it took forever and we often eat what we have in the freezer so I was typing in recipes all the time! I just dont have the time for that. I have a fit bit but I cannot figure out how to make it work with my iphone. I will try the fitness pal and see what it looks like.
I did sign up for the coaching - I am guessing I will get an email with more information at some point?

I will look at the journals section also. I am not on the computer a super lot since we homeschool and have a small farm so I will see how long it takes to post things. Thanks so much for your help and ideas!

RE: Brand spanking new and reading like crazy
So I got the fitness pal app! Yay!
I set my goals at 40%carbs 30%protein and 30%fat - is that correct? From what I am reading that is what I should do. What should I set my calories at though? I typed in my numbers on the website calculator and chose recomposition/maintenance and it says 2427. Do I want to eat that to do a reset? Or do I want to do a 15% cut and eat 2063?

I also ordered the book The New Rules of Lifting for Women. I have always loved lifting and can't wait to read it.

Well, it sounds like you are off on the right foot, and great job setting up a MFP account. I think you will find it to be a useful tool. Yes, you have your macros set up perfectly, but we will be contacting you shortly about the coaching and get you set up and started one-on-one!
