Happy early birthday! And congrats on the jeans. (Seems to be a theme on here the last couple of days!)

RE: Fresh Start @ 55...need advice
Quick question. I started having a whey protein drink in the morning. Holy appetite suppression. Is this normal? In the past I would have been thrilled about anything that suppresses my appetite but now I'm wondering....is this a good thing?

I have a cappuccino first thing in the morning, then I have the whey protein drink and it holds me right through the day. At about 3 pm I had a handful of nuts to hold me till dinner, (this happened abut 3 days in a row).

Has anyone else had this experience?

Obviously protein is filling, but I am surprised that it is *that* filling. Personally, I find that protein drinks leave me hungry in a couple hours where "real" food (protein) keeps me full much longer. I guess it is just up to the individual...

RE: Fresh Start @ 55...need advice
I AM GETTING STRONGER!

I decided to head to the local track for some HIIT work today. I hadn't attempted to run since I began heavy lifting...well, today I crushed the track! I could feel how much stronger my leg muscles were and how effortless running (well, fast jogging) felt.

Again, just confirming how backward the standard messaging has been...cardio to keep you slim & strong, when in fact, it's strength training that makes you run faster.

Question? I was running for one minute and walking for two minutes. Alternated for 20 minutes. Does that seem about right or do you have another suggestion?

Love it! With HIIT you really want to be pushing yourself as hard as you can for the High Intensity portion. As long as you were giving it your all and couldn't go any harder that is perfect!. With true HIIT you shouldn't be able to do any longer than 20 minutes because your gas tank should be on "zero"....always a good test to try.

That's AWESOME! So true about strength training = faster. No one ever talks about that. Well done, sounds like a great session.

Thanks Anitra & Emma!

Will do some self-checking on the intensity. I could have pushed harder but I thought I would pull back a bit...since I hadn't been doing this activity in a long while.

But these are the kind of markers that are so NSV -- things that don't show up on a scale, measurements or how a piece of clothing fits. It's amazing to think that it's possible to build stronger muscles, bones & tendons at any age. What a wonderful gift for the next decades.

It's magic, isn't it!

RE: Fresh Start @ 55...need advice
You will definitely want to work up to that high intensity stuff if you haven't been doing any of that lately. We certainly wouldn't want you to have a heart attack! But over time, you will find that you can push yourself harder and harder as the body adapts and becomes more fit. What once seemed impossible will soon be a breeze!

And yes, strength and fitness is so important at any age, but even moreso as we get older. That strength will serve us well and allow us to stay independent much longer than our sedentary counterparts... Love it!
