RE: Fresh Start @ 55...need advice
So, I also belong to the New Rules for Lifting for Women Facebook page...great group of women...all heavy lifting. Today there was a post from a woman who lifts heavy 3x a week, runs 20 miles a week, eats 1900-2000 calories per day and WONDERS WHY SHE BINGES!!!

As you can imagine there are lots of suggestions about "how not to bring illegal foods into the house", "how there are two kinds of people; bingers and others", "how you have to keep celery sticks & carrot sticks in your fridge to fend off a binge." Etc. Etc.

Holy moly! OF course, I did my plug for EM2WL...the original poster came back with her calorie needs from the site as 2500 and couldn't believe it! When you see things from a new light, it almost seems like insanity. Like wondering why you're thirsty when you only drink 2 glasses a water a day and live in the desert. Like wondering why you're tired if you restrict sleep. I know, I know I'm preaching to the converted.

They way they go on about "not bringing treats into the house because you can't trust yourself!" I guess it's still early days about women trusting themselves around food, about their right to eat enough.

It is amazing how our attitudes do a 180 once we figure out that under-eating (and over cardio-ing :-) was the reason for our lack of success in the past. It all becomes so clear! Binges are caused by restriction and steep deficits. Make those go away, and so will the binges. I wrote a blog post on this very topic last year that may be helpful:

Welcome to "the other side" where we are full, happy, strong and don't have to worry about when the next time we are going to fall off the wagon is going to be!

RE: Fresh Start @ 55...need advice
It's so poignant to remember all the moments of my past life when "not eating too much" was my mantra.

I'm still not tracking my calories or my weight, but my clothes are still fitting (most of them are 10 years old), BUT I am more aware of giving myself permission to enjoy my meals and not to "cut back."

I'm almost finished my container of whey protein powder and I'm not sure if I will get another one. I continued the experiment of having a drink a day and the strong appetite suppression continues to be a side effect. It absolutely kills my appetite. In my past life I would have truly thought I had discovered the secret answer to weight loss!

I've also read a lot of other threads on the forums...the women who seem to be successful at this are the ones who embrace the program and believe that the results will follow. But in all honesty, this is a hard pill for many to swallow. We're so accustomed to cutting calories, increasing our exercise, following a new plan, a new promise. Letting that all go is daunting.

I'm loving the heavy lifting! Sometimes I surprise myself when I reach to scratch my back or adjust a strap. Where did those muscles come from???

Next week, I'll be visiting my brother who is undergoing chemotherapy. We're having a city vacation on his break from chemo. I'm so glad that when I go, I will really be present with him, and will enjoy our meals together and enjoy our champagne.

You truly have discovered the "secret" behind EM2WL and those who have success with it. As long as people have the "microwave mentality" and want quick results or a "new body in just 21 days", they will be like a hamster running on that wheel. Once you give yourself permission to eat and acknowledge that (at least initially) you may not see those quick results, but instead will give your body the food it needs and be patient while it adjusts and adapts those results will come! It definitely does not happen overnight, but the success you discover will be easy to maintain for the rest of your life.

Will keep you and your brother in my thoughts this weekend. And enjoy knowing that you can go and truly enjoy his company and not have to think about "going off your diet".

A couple of other nice NSV's:

1. I'm really starting to understand how exercise helps the body (my body) to cope with stress. I needed to shake off some nervous energy last night so I did some planks & push ups. Six sets of each! That's 60 push ups! Yes, they were 'lady' push ups but none the less. And that's 6 minutes of planks! Woke up this morning, not the least bit sore. Wow, I could not have done that 3 months ago.

2. I'm really enjoying slowly adding in carbs, instead of shunning them. Love adding in rice with stir fries and yesterday as a treat I had an almond croissant. Again, it's so refreshing to remember that not all food has to be for fuel, some foods are made for pleasure.

Based on my clothes, I am not gaining weight. I'm probably at about 100 grams of carbs per day, slowly adding them back and slowly decreasing my fat consumption. What a sane journey!

RE: Fresh Start @ 55...need advice
I had a whoosh!

Looked in the mirror this morning and overnight it seems I look tighter, flatter and toned! I started heavy lifting on Dec 11, 2015, discovered EM2WL in February, adjusted my diet to include more carbs then and started to let go of the "body stress."

What I see in the mirror:
-flatter stomach
-firmer back
-losing that back fat crease
-smoother hip line

I believe that my body understands that the war is over. When I figure out how to take pictures of myself, I will post results. My plan is to finish my stage 3 of Rachel Cosgrove periodization program in May and start a cut then.

WOO HOOO!! That is awesome! And honestly, when you mentally relax and know that you are on the right path *that* is when the magic happens. Stress and the related increased cortisol levels will play havoc on the body, and once you can set all of that aside cortisol levels drop and the body responds positively. Well done!
