RE: what am I doing wrong?
With 10 years of dieting history, you are absolutely correct... The longer you can reset for the better. Just keep hitting that protein and lifting!

There is never anything wrong with hanging out at Maintenance. It is just a good solid reminder to your body of what "normal" is. Cuts should be limited to a max of 12 weeks with the deficits kept to 10 - 15% (20% max), but the time at Maintenance has no limits :-)

RE: what am I doing wrong?
A wee update....

A person never really knows what life will throw at them...and if anyone would have told me that I'd be taking care of my oldest daughters horse, I'd have called them crazy! But here I am, taking care of my daughters horse!! (she bought a house and moved 25 minutes away) It honestly isn't a big problem since I had a horse when I was younger...but the BIG difference is the muscle! When I was a kid, tossing a 50# bag of horsefeed on my shoulder and walking the length of a football field to get it to the barn was no big deal. 2 years ago it would have been IMPOSSIBLE for me to do! I don't have as far to carry it now (roughly 40 yards) but I still have to carry it...and I do! (p.s.- there's a huge difference between grabbing a dumbell/barbell with 50# on it and a flip-floppy, slippy sack of feed! lol!)
As much as I want to grumble about having to deal with frozen water buckets, hauling hay and feedsacks at my age, it's given me such a boost to know what I'm physically capable of.

The scale has leveled out; I quit gaining and have stayed within the same 3 or 4 pounds since November. Considering that I still have days that I can't hit my calories, I'm just hitting the weights with gusto and paying close attention to my protein intake. I'm very hesitant to drop calories; daughter's wedding is in Nov and I'm afraid I'll fall back into the 'hurry hurry hurry 1200 calorie' mindset and wreck my metabolism again!
I think I'll just cruise along as I am and see what happens....nail biting

RE: what am I doing wrong?
Yes on being able to do all the things that we couldn't do in the past for not having muscle! Wowza! That is an amazing NSV! Can I share it with the fam? That's truly inspiring!
And yes, a 50# DB is one things, a floppy sac is a whole different story!

You are doing a great job hanging at TDEE and hitting the weights, nice body recomp! It doesn't have to be all or nothing. I'd say you could prepare yourself and once the weather gets better, start doing mini cuts through out the year, with a small deficit for short periods of time. I am sure you will look amazing at your daughters wedding, either you cut or not.

RE: what am I doing wrong?
**sigh**
I haven't been on here much...just after I posted the "yay me! I can take care of the horse" news, I fell and tore my 'medial meniscus' in my knee! SO DISCOURAGED!
Everything I tried to do sent shooting pain up and down my leg. The first 3 weeks I could barely walk....of course, being of very stubborn Hungarian/German lineage, I didn't go to the doc right away--was hoping it wasn't serious and would heal on its own.

So I have 4 weeks of PT under my belt and a cortisone shot to reduce swelling.
(no word yet if they'll operate on it) It's feeling better so last week I re-started my 'programmed/earnest/scheduled/kick-a$$' lifting. Time is still flying and the wedding is still looming on the horizon...

RE: what am I doing wrong?
So I've been released from doctor supervision and from PT!
I can't believe how much better the knee feels! almost back to 100%
No surgery required--just strengthening exercises.

My re-start is going fine. No pain. Slow and steady increases.
Now to get my food/recipes under control...tracking (usually) only works if you have a
recipe. So many times I just toss something together...mainly because I'm
not very organized to have the proper ingredients on hand for an honest-to-goodness recipe.

I'm gonna search around for a "basic/farmstead/homemade/real-food" type of recipe book that 'hopefully'
already has the numbers calculated for tracking (and no avocados or kale!!)....do any of you have any suggestions?

RE: what am I doing wrong?
I've missed you! Good to hear you got the doctor's ok and won't need surgery, yay! And not having pain is awesome!

I'm a very intuitive cook, I changes and adapt recipes, use what I have in the paint and just guesstimate a lot. Sometimes the end result is great, sometimes not so great laughing
Tha being said, I use the recipe feature on mfp for the ones that I cook more frequently. You can even import the ingredients from a site/blog. When I don't do that, I focus on the main ingredients and let the other ones sort of slide. I use the same technique when eating out and having to guess cals and macros.
