Calories, Exercise and MyFitnessPal
Hi there :-)

Brand newbie here, started yesterday. I've set up all my numbers in MyFitnessPal, but just have a question about exercise and calories...

I noticed that after I did my walk yesterday that MFP had adjusted my calories remaining to take the exercise into account. So my question is, do I ignore it and still just work towards the number of calories I'm supposed to have, or do I let it adjust and end up being able to have a higher intake because of the exercise?

I'm brand new to all this and just don't want to start the wrong way.

Any advice is appreciated :-)
Thanks all!

RE: Calories, Exercise and MyFitnessPal
First of all welcome! So glad you have joined us over here!

The concept of MFP is that it gives you an absolute minimum base-line of calories to eat, and then adjusts that upwards if and when you exercise, and it then expects you to "eat back" those exercise calories so that you are not under eating. EM2WL is different in that we do not recommend eating back those exercise calories *because*:: When you first begin and run your numbers through an on-line calculator, that calculator will ask you how much exercise you perform in a week and then it gives you your final numbers. So that number it is giving you is already including any exercise that you may be performing during the week.

With EM2WL, we recommend that you figure out your goal number and then simply work to that number each day. If you would still like to enter your exercise into MFP (so that you have a record of it), the easiest thing to do is to enter your exercise, but then simply change the calories burned to "1". By doing that, you will have a record of your exercise, but MFP will not mess with your daily calorie goals. The thing to remember is that if you don't change the calories burned to "1" and enter the actual, estimated burn, not only will MFP mess with your calorie goal, but it will also mess with your macros! It's easy enough just to keep your calorie target in your head and ignore MFP, but it's a bit harder to remember your daily macro goals.

Have you already gone in to MFP and set your Macros as well? We would love to hear more about your story, so feel free to join us over here and share. And any questions you may have along the way, this is the place to come ... better than the MFP forum where you may get answers that vary from our philosophy.

Again, welcome, and look forward to hearing back from you and following your journey!

RE: Calories, Exercise and MyFitnessPal
Thank you so much Anitra! That was what I was thinking but wasn't 100% sure, but the tip on changing the calories burned will definitely make my life easier! Thank you!!
I've update my macros, and have only been tracking two days but I'm not able to exercise as much as I would like courtesy of a back injury, so that's why when I heard Kiki get mentioned I had to check it all out! I've been a yoyo dieter for years so I wanted something sustainable and healthy for me as a whole.
I'm very glad to be here and can't wait to get to know you all :-)

So glad to have you here! And in addition to our blogs here on the website, you can follow us on YouTube and there are tons of really informative videos that sort of guide you through the process.

Feel free to start a Journal of your own in the Personal Journals section of these forums... It's a great place to track your progress and interact with others going through the same process.

Again, welcome, and remember we are here to help you in any way we can : )
