I know this thread started a long time ago... but I thought I'd chime in since it's still around happy

Too much cardio is bad, but for an endurance runner, most runs should be done at an easy pace. If you're using a heart rate monitor (and I hope you are with that level of training), you'll want to stay around 60-75%, which is at or below your aerobic zone.

Here's the thing: Running in your "aerobic zone" is not the same as a traditional "aerobic workout".

A lot of times, "aerobics" and "cardio" are used interchangeably, but a lot of "cardio" work moves closer to the anaerobic zone: Your heart's pumping fast, you're breathing hard, you're dripping with sweat, and your muscles are tired, maybe even sore. Those are all indicators of training in the anaerobic zone.

The majority of your runs should be easy runs. During the run, you should feel like you could easily have a conversation. You shouldn't feel tired afterward and you shouldn't feel sore the next day. In fact, you should feel refreshed. Those runs maintain fitness, they don't build it. On your long runs, you want to keep a super-easy pace. Throw some walks in if you have to, but keep your heart rate low. The point of those runs is to build up endurance in your cardiovascular system. Again, I know "cardio" is in there, but it isn't the same as what most people mean when they talk about a cardio workout.
